'I’ve been starting a lot of documentation work lately for the EGit/JGit projects and happened to come across this timely article from Forbes. If you don’t want to read it, the gist of it is that solid documentation is more important than you think… especially when it comes to attracting a user and developer base. Here are some quotes… “I can report that my company receives 70% plus of our site traffic from organic sources, and our documentation generates more…

In the end, we kind of got sidetracked and there was some good discussion about source control in the corporate environment versus what is going on in open source communities. Unfortunately, it seems Subversion has a stronghold in a lot of companies still. I hope our work in JGit to…

'Some month ago I wrote a blog post about some of my thoughts on software architecture and why I think the metaphor of a cathedral is no longer very useful for todays software development. I don't mean that you don't need an architecture when you do agile software development. A good software architecture is absolutely necessary to survive. It is an essential part of each system.Nevertheless agile software development is based on the idea of embracing change. "Inspect and Adapt"…

'Gestern abend haben VMware und Salesforce eine neue Initiative namens VMforce vorgestellt, die in der zweiten Hälfte des Jahres verfügbar sein wird. Dieses Announcement ist für Spring-Entwickler besonders interessant, weil Spring das zentrale Programmiermodell für diese Umgebung sein wird. - Self Service: Man kann selber eine neue Anwendung deployen oder sich eine neue Umgebung schaffen.

'There is a two part article on the GWT docs homepage talking about large scale application development and GWT. Sorry, this is a crosspost from here… Building any large scale application has its hurdles, and GWT apps are no exception. Multiple developers working simultaneously on the same code base, while maintaining legacy features and functionality, can quickly turn into messy code. To help sort things out we introduce design patterns to create compartmentalized areas of responsibility within our project. Part…

The big new feature in this build is "Non-Linear Presentations". You no longer need…

'While preparing a talk on module systems and architectures I remembered some old talks I listened to talking about architectures and arguing why an explicit software architect is necessary within professional projects. 'Here is a short tutorial on how to make your web apps highly available with GlassFish V2 and it's new in memory replication features.Step 1: Setup a GlassFish V2 domain:
- Download GlassFish V2 beta2 (eg build 41c) from here
- Execute java -jar glassfish-installer-v2-.jar
- As we will have to use the cluster profile edit setup-cluster.xml as needed. If the default ports and passwords are ok for you there is no need to change anything. (I assume default settings for the next steps)
- Execute ant -f…

'I often get asked how a standalone client can be used to connect to EJBs deployed on GlassFish or Sun Appserver 8.x. Here are the choices: Set system properties org.omg.CORBA* You can do this either in your application code or as jvm start parameters System.setProperty("org.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialPort",""); System.setProperty("org.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialHost",""); or set it as JVM property like this: java -Dorg.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialHost=host -Dorg.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialPort=3700 Set System property com.sun.appserv.iiop.endpoints: You can also use the JVM system property com.sun.appserv.iiop.endpoint=host:port to specify the endpoint address. ' It is important to remember, that IActionBars instance is shared between all instances of editors of same type. It means, for example, that if you will call setGlobalActionHandler() form editor's createPartControl() method (as i did today) - every new editor instance will overwrite global action handler. Usually, it is not what what you really want. For creating actions, that are shared by different instance of of same editor - org.eclipse.ui.editors.IEditorActionBarContributor should be used. '…

' Update: the JRockit team gave outstanding service on this issue, and found and fixed the bug in their VM within 24 hours of it being reported. The code generated by AspectJ has also been tweaked so that it does not trigger the bug on VMs that do not have the patch. We had a bug reported on the aspectj mailing list this week, in which a simple program returning a boolean value would return "true" when the code clearly…

' For the past 2 months I've been working extremely hard putting together a course on AOP with AspectJ and Spring 2.0. One thing I've learnt is just how much effort goes into such a venture: each teaching module, with it's associated hands-on labs, samples, and presentation material takes between 1.5 - 2 days to prepare, and there are four modules on each day of the course. However hard I tried, I couldn't develop the material any faster than that.…

' Graham Hamilton posted a blog entry on AOP this week. It's attracted a good deal of criticism in the responding comments - probably because of the provocative writing style. Graham's certainly been in the game long enough to know the difference between technical discussion and political positioning - and how to blur the two. Graham divides his criticism into "the good", "the bad" and "the new". "The good" includes container based AOP, "the bad" includes just about everything else.…

' In Germany they have an entire magazine devoted to Eclipse, called (imaginatively ;) "Eclipse Magazin"". I don't speak (or read) German, but I have to say the content always looks really good, and they've had some excellent coverage of AspectJ and AJDT in past issues. The magazine has a guest column, "MyEclipse" in which various users of Eclipse describe their favourite hints and tips for working with the IDE. It was my turn to write the column this month.…

Secondly, it tells me a lot about the background and…
